The history of Secrid goes back to the 1990s when cash was slowly being replaced by debit cards. The design firm Spirid launched the first wallet at the time, but despite its success, it was not a priority. During the economic crisis in 2008, the design agency's orders came to a halt and they decided to focus on the wallet. In 2009 the Secrid Cardprotector was presented which received the Red Dot Design Award and in 2012 the Secrid Miniwallet received the European Aluminium Award.

To prevent forgery, every Secrid Wallet is finished off at the end of the production process with a unique serial number to act as proof of authenticity.
